Hampshire Coach selected for British Team
Local Martial arts instructor John Carpenter (43) has been selected to represent Great Britain at the 2009 Aikido World Games. The competition which will be held in Kyoto, Japan next month will last for 4 days and over 400 competitors from 7 countries will take part.
John will represent Great Britain in the Men’s individual Tanto, 5 Man Team Tanto and the Kongo Dantaisen which is a mixed event with 6 other competitors. John has been practicing Aikido for the past 10 years and runs his own club in West End on Thursday evenings whilst teaching children Aikido at a club in Toynbee School on Saturdays.
He has represented Great Britain on 2 previous occasions and in 2007 was selected as the Team Captain, won Silver in the Men’s 5 Man Team Tanto and Bronze in the Men’s’ Toshu event. John is looking to bring back a Gold medal this time since he intends to retire from International Aikido after this event and concentrate on being a referee for future events.
